Children Who Have A Stammer

Stuttering affects people in different ways. There are those people who you would never believe would have a stutter and this is because they are so good at hiding it. Many people they mix with, may not even be aware that they have a stuttering problem. They have become so good at avoiding certain words or by finding alternative words, that they can make out that they are fluent. This is something which requires a great deal of effort and just imagine the other person shock when they do eventually stutter.

Other people who have a stutter are unable to do this and can have what is seen as a more severe stutter.

A person who has a stutter can find the following situations quite difficult:

under pressure

very tired

meeting new people

speaking in an uncomfortable situation

asking questions, for example asking for directions

introducing people

Stuttering treatment:

There are many types of stuttering help or stuttering treatments available these days. Most people would first try a speech therapist or speech pathologist. Alternatively they can attend a speech course which can be in a group or on a one to one basis.

I personally prefer and advise one to one stuttering courses as I believe every person who has a stutter is an individual and has their own individual type of stutter.

There are also stuttering self help DVD’s or stuttering self help ebooks now available for people who do not feel they have the confidence to attend a speech course.

Whichever option people choose it essential that they have the attitude to work hard as there is unfortunately no magic pill to cure this form or in fact any form of speech impediment.

You may well have read that the techiques can be successful in eradicating a stammer or stutter but this success only comes via hard work and dedication.

Work hard and you will receive the desired rewards – and that is total fluency.

How Can I Eradicate These Voices From My Head?

As I was growing up through childhood into adulthood I felt that I was rather unlucky. I had a speech impediment (a stutter/stammer), a bald patch on my head which was the size of a ten pence piece, I constantly struggled with my weight (I was basically fat) and I am quite short for a male at five foot four.

I seemed to have voices in my head or brain which I called my demons.I am not sure but I used to listen to the advice that these were demons were providing me with and would seemingly follow every word of it. It was seemingly especially worse when I was at work at the DVD authoring workshop.

As I entered into my twenties I could no longer live life in this way and I declared WAR on these voices in my head. I started to read many books on self-confidence, thinking positive, stuttering help and mind over matter.

I needed to basically think more positive, be more assertive, and far more care-free. I learnt that in life all you can do is to try your best. During my war, there were many battles with these horrible demons, some of which I certainly lost. I kept on talking to the demons telling them that they may have won the battle but that they will not win the war.

I did eventually win my war after quite a long period of time. I now like myself and am pleased to report that I have also overcome the speech impediment. I now enjoy a good life and I have a successful career as an SEO consultant.

The main lesson that I learnt is to do the opposite of what the demons tell you to. They are the devil and they lie therefore we have to stop listening to them. I wish you every success in your quest to become more care-free.

Treatments For Stuttering

So you have realised that speech therapy is doing very little to improve your fluency and have now decided to seek an alternative form of stuttering therapy, but what options are available for people who have this form of speech impediment?

At the age of eighteen, after having attended the traditional forms of speech therapy for the previous fourteen years, I also decided that enough was enough. I felt let down by the system, by the lack of understanding of the problems that I was having to face on a daily basis, surely there must be some treatments for stuttering out there that is better than this.

All of this happened fully 17 yrs ago prior to the birth of the internet. I originally visited a number of libraries in my quest to find a cure for stuttering; unfortunately this did not provide me with the answers that I was looking for. I then looked in my local yellow pages and also went to see my local doctor but again it was as if there was not a person or therapist which specialised in the treatments for stuttering. Why is there no-one who really cares out there?

Fortunately nowadays, since the birth of the internet, people have access to a massive amount of resources and information via the web. They are able to find the latest therapies for stuttering by doing a simple search on one of the major search engines, such as Google, I sure wish that this had been an option for me all those years ago.

Options in stop stuttering therapy include speech therapy courses run by people who have managed to overcome a stutter. These are normally held on a group basis however there are one-to-one stuttering courses out there, these are the most popular and beneficial but they can have long waiting lists due to this popularity.

Attending a speech course is not suitable to everyone and for people who are unable to attend such a course there are a number of powerful and beneficial self-help stuttering products on the market.

A Tale To Inspire The Masses

Growing up I had many things to be negative about, I had a stutter, I have a bald patch, I was overweight and am also quite short for a male at five foot four. I was one of the ones who walked around in a depressed state and I used to feel sorry for myself. Even when I write about it now, I laugh about how stupid I used to be.

As I entered into my twenties I was in real need to change the way in which I was living my life. I was quite fortunate in that I had a friend at the company (a composite doors supplier), I worked for, who was to prove an inspiration to me. His name was Stuart, and even though this may seem cruel, Stuart did not have a lot going for him. I won’t go into details but lets just say even with the problems I felt I had, I was not jealous of him. I became quite good friends with Stuart and we would regularly have lunch together.

We would meet at around one o’clock and I would be stood there, no doubt looking gloomy, waiting for him to arrive. As he arrived to meet me all you could see was this huge beaming and welcoming smile, a smile which took-over his whole face. This always amazed me as I could never understand what he had to be happy about. We would sit down and talk whilst eating our lunch and he never had a negative word to say. When he talked, he talked with passion, about his work and interests. One day it dawned on me, if Stuart (who from what I know of him, seemingly has nothing going for him) can always be positive, happy and smiling, why can’t I?

This was the beginning of my new outlook on life. An era of being positive, appreciating what I have got and more than anything else, plenty of smiles. I now am happy with my weight, height, bald patch and am proud to say I have now overcome my stuttering speech impediment. I also have a new career as an SEO consultant.

I hope this article proves to be of inspiration to at least some of its readers.
