Arm Yourself With Knowledge to Defeat This Silent Disease That Sneaks Up On You….

Armed with a little knowledge, you can teach your children how to avoid some nasty inconveniences in life such as gum disease and receding gums! Read on to gain valuable insight.

Gum recession defined- Before we can get to why gums recede it is important to establish what recession actually is. Gum recession refers to retraction or separation of gum tissue from alveolar bone and teeth. In layman’s terms this is called: ‘getting long in the tooth’.

What causes gums to recede?- Pressure on teeth and gums is a major cause of gum recession. Aggressive brushing by hard bristle brushes, unbalanced jaws as well as spicy and hot foods may all potentially lead to retraction. Bacteria produced by plaque on teeth and underneath the gum line has been identified as the number one culprit destroying gum tissue and in turn leading to gum recession.

Other possible causes – Nutritional deficiencies including a lack of Vitamin C is also a potential cause of the problem, thus daily, nutritional supplements may be helpful.

Signs and symptoms- In the initial phase of the recession, signs and symptoms may not be clearly visible. However there are a couple of very clear indications that a serious underlying problem may be brewing including bad breath, loose teeth, pain or discomfort, tenderness and bleeding gums

What are the available treatment options?- Unfortunately, there is no ultimate cure for receding gums except surgery which may be very intrusive not to mention painful and not recommended for all patients due to the fact that the problem may not justify surgery.

There are two options that in addition to getting your teeth cleaned professionally every two to three months can help. One is the HydroFloss oral irrigator. This device is something that many people, both professionals and non-professionals alike think is worth having.

You should also consider getting some therabreath oral rinses. These rinses have the power of oxygen in them and this can help fight bacteria that produce gum disease and bad breath.

One thing is for sure, the battle against gum disease is a fight that must be fought every day. There is no ‘taking a day off’ This is especially true if you have already developed a problem that must be fix. Now, that you have a little bit of knowledge, go out and defeat this disease or prevent it from happening in the first place. This is a danger to every person and every family.

Save Yourself From Periodontitis

In the broadest terms, gum disease, also medically referred to as periodontal disease, is plain and simple, the growth of bacteria in your mouth. This eventually advances to stages, attacking gum tissue that is attached to your teeth providing stability. In German, zahnfleischprobleme, is the name for gum problems.

As bacteria advances it creates what we call plaque that fixes itself to the teeth. If you don’t avoid this the plaque builds further and becomes tartar. This is difficult to get off of your teeth as it is binded like
glue, becoming harder to scrape off. You would know this as gingivitis.

During the initial stages of gingivitis, you will begin to experience your gums turning from pink to red, and you’ll have some bleeding when you brush your teeth are the affects. This is probably when you should visit a professional. Treated quickly at this point should allow you to save your teeth.

You can begin to take protective action early by committing to a daily hygiene routine. This simply means your teeth should be brushed after all meals. Include a thorough flossing on a regular basis. With a consistent program, you can reduce plaque which will ultimately fight off the chances of getting gingivitis.

Once gingivitis sets in, it goes into the next stage known as periodontal disease. This is more threatening. At this time you will notice gaps forming between your teeth because the bone and gums start pulling apart. You will see visual affects.

In most cases, particles of food are trapped and result in pain and infection. Additionally, your teeth begin to loosen up and you are at risk of them coming out due to instability.

By looking out early and being able to identify signs, gum disease can be treated to help restore your beautiful and wholesome mouth.

Gum Disease - Can You Spare Yourself From Getting It?

Periodontal Disease is a more advanced stage of gingivitis and gum disease. All three terms are basically descriptions for different stages of the same disease. Periodontists and dentists may go a bit further in their classifications, but basically it is the same theoretical cause for all three of these.

Gingivitis can develop into something serious and lead to losing teeth. In fact, it is the number one cause of tooth loss and not cavities as one might suppose. The area of most concern is that most people don’t understand that they have this problem, nor do they have the information they need to effectively fight against it or stop it from occurring in the first place.

Understand that many people have the semi-false notion that brushing and flossing will protect them from gum disease. This myth is fed by the truth that there really are some people who this is enough for.

However, because the statistics are so high when it comes to the number of people who actually have gum disease, common sense dictates that mere brushing and flossing actually is not enough for many or even most people.

What can be done? There appears to be a bit of a gap between what is understood by the masses on brushing and flossing and what can really work to stop or prevent periodontal disease. There are tools and techniques that you can utilize to do more towards preventing the build up of plaque that eventually leads to the more advanced problems. Look for the links at the bottom of this article to find out what you can do to prevent periodontal disease or stop it from progressing.

However, please understand that there is no magic one thing that works for all people, everywhere. If it were so simple, then the large industry that is supported by this problem would not exist. As in most things, you have to experiment a little to find what will work for you.

If you were under the impression that this was only a tiny problem, find a periodontist’s office and hang out in the lobby. Find out what you can do today to stop this problem from afflicting you or your family.
