Time management is something all business professionals deal with. As a personal trainer with a business, you also have to plan around the busy days of your clients. Many of us may have different approaches to scheduling time, but only a few really know an efficient way to tackle time management.
Many people are conditioned to work by a list. Sometimes that’s the only way people know how. 7 a.m. client, 8 a.m. meeting, 9 a.m. client, 9:30 client, 10:15 client, and on the list goes. At home, there are usually chores associated with dinner, getting kids ready for bed, etc.
That’s a schedule. But there are better ways to utilize your time.
Leveraging means balancing. It’s important to have a healthy balance of your time.
You cannot make improvements in your own balance if you have no idea where your life is on the scale. You will have to evaluate where you are now.
Journal your time for several days, preferably a whole week. Then go back and discover how much time you spent with family and friends.
-
Did you spend time doing a hobby or something else you really enjoyed?
-
What was your last read?
-
How much exercise were you able to do?
-
Did you read anything during the trial period?
-
If so, was it for work or for enjoyment?
-
How much time did you allow to work toward a personal goal?
If you’re stuck on a typical “to do” list schedule, chances are you’ll see that your time is imbalanced in some of these areas. Do the math on where you spent your time and on what. How much time did you spend for career, family, personal growth, reading and other interests? Make yourself a little chart showing the percentage of each area of life and how much time you spent on it. What percent of your time was spent on work versus family and other areas important to you? This might be a real eye opener!
The great part about this exercise is that once you see how little time you spend on personal development, you can devise a plan to change it. Figure out what kind of time you want to devote to each aspect of your life.
When you understand the idea of time leverage, your life won’t be held hostage by a “to do” list ever again! The “to do” list is an important way to track chores, but life should be more than a chore.
