Some folks have gotten it into their heads that they are too old to learn Spanish. A lack of interest or effort is one reason they won’t succeed at learning Spanish. If you really want to learn to speak Spanish and you are prepared to make an effort then you will be successful. No two people learn at the same pace or in the same way. You also have to remember that not everyone learns the same way.
You might want to listen to an mp3 recording for your preferred learning method but someone else might prefer reading. Now that you know that learning environment and method of learning are important factors then maybe you will succeed this time. Maybe, you never learned that other language because it was not the right time in your life but now you’re able to see a real value and your enthusiasm and motivation is much higher so successful language learning is just around the corner.
If it was a bet to determine who learns a second language faster I would always wager on the highly motivated adult over the younger person. All sounds a young person can pick up that a trained adult can’t pick up once they are aware that those sounds exist. One of the big problems adults have when learning a second language is fear of making mistakes or looking bad so they hold back from engaging a native speaker of their chosen language or speaking out loud in the classroom setting. If you really want to be successful then get over that fear of talking in public hurdle immediately and just start talking Spanish out loud. Don’t be afraid to use the wrong word or miss pronounce a sentence when you are communicating with a native speaker or in the class room setting.
A great advantage an adult has over a child in learning a second language is that you can afford to travel and spend time with native speakers. If you are planning to learn Spanish then book a Spanish vacation four to six months ahead of time to give you something to shoot for. Just remember the Spanish language can be acquired at any time in any stage of a person’s life. It probably is easier to take the time now to learn Spanish than in any other time of your life.
