Are Out Of Body Experiences Just Myths?

Astral projection is also known as an out-of-body experience and it is an event that can occur to a great many people at various times. These events will commonly occur during a major trauma although many people report having experienced such events through their own sheer willpower.

This is the more commonly known astral projection. Many people have claimed to have out of body experiences and many more people have claimed to be able to perform astral projection. While the basic techniques for these abilities are the same, they can differ slightly depending on the person. However, some question the validity of the claims of these abilities.

For centuries, there have been people who have experienced the phenomenon of out of body experiences. Some of them have experienced them during sleep and ignored it, believing that what they saw was a dream. However, most out-of-body experiences are experienced during major trauma such as surgeries.

There are many accounts of out-of-body experiences that occur during near-death situations. In all cases of out-of-body experiences, the person having them state that they are able to see and hear everything that is going on in the room. These people can describe events that occurred while they were in this state and would otherwise not be known to them.

Out-of-body experiences are also known to occur as the result of taking psychedelic drugs or those drugs known to deliver a dissociative effect. Yet, there are also a great many techniques needed to induce an out-of-body experience. A common example of this would be the use of visualization while in a highly relaxed and meditative state. Many studies have shown that there can be similar experiences to out-of-body experience that can be brought about through the direct stimulation of the brain.

Among the most common forms of all out-of-body experiences is the process of astral projection. During astral projection, a human being develops the ability to leave the body and visit other physical places as well as the world of astral planes or even higher planes of existence.

In the world of renaissance Neoplatonist and Rosicrucian philosophy, in addition to scores of other philosophical thought processes, it is stated that an astral body in body created by light and will link the concept of the “rational soul” and the physical body in the form of an intermediate. Within these theories it is stated that an astral plane is a world and realm devised by the same light and exist in an area between heaven and earth. The composition of this realm will be derived from spheres of stars and exist amidst a home of angels, demons, and spirits.

According to many ancient Egyptian beliefs, the soul presents the common ability to hover, or float, outside the body in the “Ka” which is also referred to the subtle body. This has also been known as the astral body. In most common beliefs in astral projection, the astral body is associated with a “silver cord” of psychic energy that is linked to the physical body.

The classical Chinese Taoists took part in an alchemical practice that centered on creating a body of energy via the employment of breathing meditations, pulling energy into an internal section dubbed a “pearl” and then circulating the mysterious pearl through the body to create a powerful base of energy.

While an out-of-body experience occurs, many individuals have noted that they willed themselves to leave their physical body. Other people have made reports that they discovered themselves venturing out of their bodies as if they were being pulled. Then, there are others that stated that they did not realize they exited their bodies until long after they were already out of it. Many people even stated that they wished to get out of bed and when they sought to venture to their door, they found out they could not touch the door. Upon realizing this, they looked towards their bed and saw their physical body lying down.

Neurologists have long tried to explain such events as being triggered by an errant mismatch of the visual and tactile signals. The great majority of out-of-body experiences have taken place during the duration that exists between REM sleep and the point prior to waking up. Among the many points of time where out-of-body experiences occur, the subject will go into a state commonly known as sleep paralysis. During this time between being asleep and awake, sleep paralysis might potentially continue and dream-like imagery will become mingled with sensations that reach the senses.

However, a great many scientific studies in the field of astral projection and out-of-body experiences have been undertaken over the years. There are many studies showing that out of body experiences do really happen. There are several top research facilities found in many different countries, including the Monroe Institute in Virginia, as well as the Projectarium at the International Academy of Consciousness in Portugal and the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience in Switzerland.

The Out of Body Experience Through the Ages

For hundreds of years, individuals have experienced a state in which their spiritual self, or soul, is freed from their physical body, allowing their spirit to then explore regions of time and space that differ from the plane their physical body is inhabiting. This state is called the out of body experience, sometimes abbreviated as OBE.

Some of the characteristics of this experience, sometimes called astral projection, include feelings of weightlessness, a sense of being free from physical limitations, and being able to look at one’s own physical body from a multi-dimensional, external point of view.

People who report having an out of body experience usually have their experience immediately after living through one of three situations: a physically, mentally and/or emotionally traumatic event, an interaction with drugs, or an intentionally-induced state achieved through meditation and a sequence of specific steps.

Out of body experiences are different than dreams in that they are conscious states of awareness, often very vivid and unfolding in real time, whereas dreams are simply manifestations of the subconscious mind that may or may not seem real. Those who have had out of body experiences report feeling their senses heightened, and often that they possess other depths of awareness in addition to their physical senses.

Individuals who report their out of body experiences also say that their spirits or souls seem to take on another form, a form that is in addition to, and separate from, their physical bodies. This separate spirit, sometimes called the astral body, is then free to travel to different dimensions of space and time, and free even to encounter the spirits of deceased loved ones inhabiting the other side.

For this reason it’s easy to see why many individuals actively pursue the out of body experience, whether in search of answers to the unknown questions of the world such as ‘what happens after we die’ or ‘how big is the universe?’ or simply to reconnect with a friend of a relative with whom one has business yet unfinished.

It’s important to also note out of body experiences happen to people from all walks of life, all cultures, and all ages. Some are hesitant to say that they’ve had an out of body experience for fear of religious repercussions, but evidence of such experiences has been documented in religious scriptures throughout history, from various ancient Native American oral traditions to the Christian Bible.

Although most people who actively try to have an out of body experience are new age thinkers, the practice actually is an ancient way to strive for personal enlightenment and betterment.

Surprisingly, individuals report traveling outside of their physical bodies with some degree of frequency: about one out of every 15 people has experienced some sort of out of body experience. Such experiences happen to people in almost any situation as well, from sleeping or relaxing to being in the midst of a violent situation such as an accident or a pending accident. The rationale for such a wide spectrum of causality is simply, people are different, and thus respond differently to various situations.

Common to many reports of out of body experience is the feeling of vibration, or the physical self suddenly becoming very heavy. Many believe this feeling is actually the separation of the spiritual self from the physical self in order for the former to then pursue its travels along the astral plane.

Some who are new to the concept of out of body experience may fear that if the spiritual self separates in this way, it then runs the risk of not being able to reenter. Experts suggest that the physical and the spiritual selves are permanently linked, however, and that this is especially the case for those self-aware enough to purposefully induce a state of separation in the first place. For this reason, it is not believed that one can become trapped outside his or her physical body, and therefore there is no reason to fear exploring.

Having an out of body experience is more common that one might think, and has been a part of human life across the cultural spectrum for centuries. It has long been considered a method for gaining personal understanding and enlightenment for the world and universe that surrounds us.

Opportunities for growth not only in personal insight, but technological advancement lie beyond our physical consciousness as well if only we will quiet our minds long enough to allow our true inner selves the freedom they so fundamentally crave. Through personal study and practice, one can begin the process of unlocking his or her own personal potential and spiritual awakening — the path is there, and we have only to take the first step.

The Seven Techniques of Astral Projecting

For those that are new to astral projecting, there can be a number of stumbling blocks that you need to overcome to successfully astral project. First you need to understand that you have the ability, everyone does. So this isn’t about trying to learn something new, or force something that isn’t nature. Look at it as something that you have to fine tune, like roller skating, cartwheels, riding a bike. You never forget how to do these activities, when you haven’t done them in a long time you do have to practice. The same holds true for astral projecting.

The biggest problem which many face as they learn astral projecting is learning to relax fully. To astral project, you have to be able to totally relax your body and your mind. There are a lot of different ways which you can relax – these methods include muscle relaxation and breathing techniques.

When astral projecting, you need an environment which allows you to be comfortable and fully relaxed. The tips in this article will help you to relax and begin astral projecting.

*Take off any jewelry and change out of any clothing which is restrictive or uncomfortable. Many choose to remove their clothes before astral projecting, but the important thing here is to make yourself comfortable so that you can relax fully.

*You will want to practice your astral projecting in a dim or dark room. It should be dark enough that you cannot see light through your closed eyes, but not so dark as to be pitch black.

*Position your body pointing from north to south, with your head at the northern end. Use the sun as your guide if you are unsure which way is north. Remember, the sun sets in the west and rises in the east.

*While you practice astral projecting, make sure that the clothes you wear keep you warm, but are comfortable and loosely fitting.

*Your astral projecting should be practiced in a quiet room where you will not have any distractions.

*It is time to enter a state of relaxation, (this is where you want to practice your relaxation techniques.)

*Give yourself suggestions to help you remember what you see and do when astral projecting. Tell yourself at least five times before you begin “I will remember”. Having pen and paper nearby is a good idea, since you can then write down what happened as soon as you return to your body.

*Use breathing techniques to bring yourself into a relaxed state.

*While you relax yourself with your breathing techniques, start focusing on the blackness in front of you.

*Now you want to focus on a point or object about a foot away from your forehead, once you focus on that object change your focus to six feet away.

*Imagine a line which runs at a ninety degree angle from this point six feet away to your body.

By following these tips, you’ll be well prepared for astral projecting. In order to get the best results from astral projection, you need to be in full control mentally. Your astral body may wander off randomly otherwise, which is a waste of your efforts. You can go anywhere and do anything when you are astral projecting, so make sure to think of where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do.

There are some astral projecting practitioners that are able to talk with loved ones they have lost. There are others that take part in activities that they are not able to do in the physical realm of reality. Contrary to what you may think, you have done this already. Now you need to have control over what is happening. Those dreams that you wake up and remember really well were actually astral traveling. Now it is time for you to learn to do it intentionally to reap the benefits of what astral projecting can do for you.

Learning How to Astral Project

We are all born with the ability to astral project. Practice is the only reason some astral project and some do not. It is an ancient art and has been practiced for centuries deserving the same respect as yoga or meditation. Astral projection is known by different names and types. There are many different techniques to achieve astral projection.

The first type of astral projecting that should be talked about is lucid dreaming. We all know what lucid dreaming is, it is when you are consciously dreaming. One form of this conscious dreaming is astral projection. You can do this rather simply. What you need to do is when you are dreaming is realize that you are dreaming and say to yourself in the dream ‘I am dreaming.’

Doing this lets you take the reins in your dreams – but it takes a while to master this, making it not the best way for beginners to astral project.

You need to accept the fact that astral projection will work. It is something that happens to everyone, you are just not aware of it. Have you awakened from a dream still fresh in your mind, which seems as though you really lived the experience? These dreams are an actual experience of astral projection.

It is very important to have confidence that you can astral project. This will ensure you have a better chance of being successful at having an astral projection experience.

Learn some good meditation and relaxation techniques; these will make it easier for you to astral project. Meditation will get your mind and body ready for the experience of astral projection. Start practicing relaxation and meditation routines you like to get prepared.

One good way to start your meditation (and astral projecting) is to sit in a comfortable chair in a quiet room where you will not be interrupted or distracted. You need to clear all thoughts from your mind and focus on your breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply. Feel your tension and worry leaving your body with each exhalation. Before long, you’ll be nearing the deeply relaxed state necessary to astral project.

You now need to go deeper into a state of altered consciousness. Just think about your breathing as you are now without worry or stress. Your mind is clear, you are taking deep breathes. Focus on breathing in through the nose and letting the airflow out through your mouth. You are breathing slower and deeper and getting more relaxed, now focus on relaxing your body.

Starting from your toes and working your way up, relax each part of your body. There are two ways you can do this. One is to tense, then relax each part of your body as you move upwards, the other is to visualize the tension leaving each part of your body as you exhale.

The best way to describe what you are going to feel is ‘heavy’ it is going to feel as though all of the energy and tension is slipping away from each part of your body. You will know it when it happens. Once you have relaxed each part of your body it is time for you to move to the next step that is going to help you astral project.

Your body and your mind will be completely relaxed and it would be very easy to fall asleep, but don’t! To stay alert, you can repeat a phrase to yourself. It doesn’t matter what this phrase is – it could be as simple as ‘walk the dog, walk the dog’.

Your mind may want to drift off and cause thoughts to start flowing through it. You do not want this to happen. You need to keep your focus on a phrase to keep these thoughts out. You will have to end the session and start over if you lose your focus.

There are a few different ways you can reach the kind of altered state required for astral projection. You can keep repeating your phrase until you reach it, or use the ‘body of light’ method, where you visualize yourself transforming into a body made of light.

When you begin to astral project three things will happen to let you know. You will have a feeling of movement. You will notice different colors and lights in front of you. Your eyes will be closed as you are still in your chair or bed. When you see the lights this is when you are passing into the astral zone. Voices will tell you to go on and encourage you or tell you to stop now as a warning. When you hear these voices, it means you have succeeded in astral projecting.
